83 Unique Tanks Engineered for the world’s most sustainable potash mine

This project spanned 2 years, from initial design to troubleshooting installation issues on site. A total of 107 tanks were engineered by Arka and fabricated by AGI Envirotank.

Underground Tanks

We engineered 4 hanging underground water tanks. We designed a custom skid to support the tanks during installation and service.

We created a detailed lifting and lowering plan for the customer, as well as recommended changes to their lifting specification. The total hanging weight of these tanks supported by the tunnel ceiling is over 125,000 lbs.

  • Tanks lowered into mineshaft with less than 3 inches of clearance
  • Tanks hang from mine tunnel ceiling using up to 18 hanging lugs

Rectangular Pumpboxes

We engineered 14 rectangular pumpboxes.

These large tanks are unlike any rectangle in the UL or ULC standards, so we built our own rectangle design methodology from scratch using load distribution spreadsheets, panel formulas, and FEA.

  • Operating volumes between 7,000L and 118,000L
  • Internal tie rods to reduce size of frame beams
  • Optimized stiffener layout to save over 41,000 lbs of steel saved compared to original bid

Conical Pumpboxes

We engineered 9 conical pumpboxes.

These pumpboxes feature a steep cone angle for the flow of slurry, which created engineering and fabrication challenges. The customer requested that the bottom of the cone be a removable bolted section, so we engineered a custom ASME flange and gasket design.

  • Operating volumes between 7,000L and 84,000L
  • Stainless steel and Carbon steel construction

ASME STS-1 Stacks

This project included 8 stacks, varying in in diameter and height from 2 ft x 50 ft all the way to 5 ft x 93 ft.

Special engineering features include installing the baseplate at a midpoint of the stack, allowing the bottom section to be free from large compressive stresses and saving material and design cost on the breach openings.
